Peer Tutoring

No one learns piano alone here. At our peer tutoring program, we match beginners with experienced club members for personalized, judgment-free guidance to strengthen technique and musicality while fostering lasting relationships within the club.

BS, Integrated Design and Media · Class of 2027

My incredible hand-eye coordination is evident in my surprising knack for spilling coffee on new shirts, coloring outside the lines, and missing high fives. While I do play the piano occasionally for social credit, it more often than not means I am procrastinating and should be doing something more important…

Yiwen Wang
Yiwen WangVice President
Undecided · Class of 2029

Hi, I am Yiwen Wang, a previous piano-major student, international competition winner, concert band conductor, and a forever music lover. Piano for me is a language, a peer, and a bridge—a bridge that allows us to communicate with the composer, a certain era, the audience, and most importantly, ourselves. I can’t wait to meet you on this bridge.

Hi! I'm Andrew, this year's Treasurer for Piano Society. I've been playing piano for 16 years now, originally starting in classical but now moving towards jazz. My favorite composers and pianists are Rachmaninoff and McCoy Tyner. I'm really excited to meet everyone and have a great semester!

Music connects, inspires, and motivates us. Musical notes play upon our moods and minds, sometimes more effectively than words. I’ve been playing the piano since I was 5 to not only learn musicality but to collaborate with other musicians and connect to diverse communities. See you soon!

My name is Leeben and I'm so excited to be on the Events team again! I play jazz piano and I produce R&B, Afrobeats, and jazz. I love performing, jamming with people, and going to concerts! So if you want to jam, see a show, or just talk about music, I'll be there!

I started piano after a childhood concert I barely remember, but the feeling never faded. Music gave me a world of emotion before I had words for it. Chopin is my favorite composer. My cat with mismatched eye colors is my loyal practice companion.

Thrilled to be on board! A keyboard player learning to become a pianist. I love music and love sharing it with others. My Christmas wish is to have bigger hands, and for every keyboard in the world to get a little bigger, so I won’t hit the wrong notes and have to pretend I’m playing contemporary music.

Screen Scoring · Class of 2028

My name is Max. I am a composer and producer in NYU Screen Scoring. I play both classical and jazz piano. I've been listening to Jacob Mann a lot recently. Very excited to be a part of the Piano Society.

Collaborative Arts · Class of 2028

Hi, I’m Amelia! I’ve been playing classical piano for 16 years. I used to hate piano so much, but now I love it so much. Outside of piano, I’m also interested in many other art forms such as photography, performing arts, dance, music production, and animation. I’m excited to meet everyone!

Common Questions

Not at all. Plenty of members come to listen or to learn from scratch through peer tutoring. There are no auditions.

Mostly, yes — University policy means an NYU ID is needed to enter the buildings where we hold most meetings and practice sessions. Some events are open to everyone, though: our end-of-year recitals and off-campus trips welcome guests from outside NYU, including as performers.

No. Everything the Society runs — recitals, lessons, socials — is free to attend.

Around Washington Square — mostly the Kimmel Center and NYU practice rooms, with recital venues announced for each event.

Yes. Join the mailing list or Discord at any time, then come to whichever event feels like the right first one.

Weekly or biweekly, depending on the semester. The Events page on this site lists everything already scheduled, and we post an announcement on our social channels right before each one.

Performance sign-ups are shared through the mailing list and community channels before each recital. Players of every experience level are welcome.

Watch for tutoring sign-ups in the weekly email, where you can register either to receive lessons or to teach them. You can also contact the Society directly and the team will help find a suitable match.
